2021 Writing Progress

It’s almost the end of the year, so I want to take a moment to reflect on my writing progress for this year. I’m writing this post on December 19th because I only have a couple days left to film it before I travel for the holidays. There’s a very good chance my word count will go up a little before the end of 2021, but here’s what I have so far.

I had three main writing projects this year. I rewrote the second novel in my series, which I abbreviate as AWS, from January to March, making it my new record for fastest time writing a novel. I then promptly broke that record again by winning Camp NaNoWriMo in April when I wrote the third book in my series, AWD. And of course, I wrote blog posts, which ranged from book reviews to book tags to short stories. So what do my word counts look like?

AWS: 44,036

AWD: 52,941

Blog Posts: 178,793

Total: 275,770

I know I fell behind with my blog posts because I was too busy with my internship and grad school and therefore my word counts would have been higher if I had stayed on schedule, but I’m not going to complain about writing over 275,000 words in a year. I don’t think I’ve ever written this much, and it feels good knowing I wrote so much despite the challenges and setbacks I faced.

My writing goals for the year were simple: write AWS for Camp NaNo and share my writing publicly to get my name out there. While I ended up writing AWD for Camp NaNo instead, writing two novels is more than I had intended and a huge amount of progress for my series. Now I just have to write the last book. And edit all of them. A lot. But I’ll think about that later….I also succeeded in sharing stories and book-related things with people. I was honestly surprised by the word count for my blog. It’s way higher than I expected.

Clearly, my decision to take a semester off of work and school benefited my writing significantly (and I know we all hate the pandemic, but I have to thank it—or the stimulus checks, rather—for giving me the financial means to do that). I doubt I’ll write anything close to 275,000 words next year since I’ll be in school all year (yes, even in the summer), so having such a strong word count this year is great.

Thank you everyone for following along my writing journey for this year. I hope you’ve enjoyed at least some of what I’ve written. I’m excited to see what 2022 has in store.
